Sisterhood - A Poem

My one non-academic publication is a poem that I wrote in Junior High. I entered it in a children’s poetry contest and it was selected for publication in an anthology called “A Dragonfly Summer.” The poem itself was written while swimming laps. Honestly, a lot of the time I spent swimming was actually spent composing. Let’s just say that I was notoriously bad at keeping count of my laps. Most of the time I ended up just following my sister back and forth until she was done!

Sisterhood

That's how it began
Our sisterhood
Swimming side by side
The way sisters should

That is how
We made our way
Across the clear
And glass-like bay

That bay is like life
Its water’s like glass
Shatter it can
As it had in the past

And the glass it could cut
When it shattered one day
But my sister and I
Kept that pain at bay
