Into Madness - Part 3

The Gentle Giant

“Have you heard about what Kev and the other guys are going to do?” Gerund asked standing in the doorway of Veronica’s room.

Veronica, his sister, looked up from the notes she was writing at her desk. “Yeah, I heard Alyssa arguing with Bernard after supper. How’d you find out and why don’t you come in?”

Gerund glanced over to where Morgan, Veronica’s roommate, sat on the opposite bed inspecting the tongues of fire that were dancing between her fingers.

“Do you mind?” He asked.

The Asian girl’s eyes didn’t waiver from the flames as she shrugged. Gerund went and sat on Veronica’s bed, gingerly as the bed creaked under his weight. His sister turned in her chair to face him. “Who told you?”

“Sheila,” Gerund appreciated it when Veronica suppressed a smile. His younger sister wasn’t above teasing him but had so far left him alone when it came to the small crush, he had on the girl who had been nothing but kind to him when most everyone else saw him as a blundering idiot. “She wanted to see if I could talk Arwin out of it – but I couldn’t.”

Veronica shrugged, “that’s not your fault. They’re all demented if they think that they can sneak into the library and learn a bunch of advanced spells with no one being the wiser. You’d think they’d be working on their Interplay of the Elements paper for Monday.”

Gerund winced, not wanting to think about the paper that his younger sister would have to walk him through step-by-step just as she’d been doing for years to get him into the academy. “I’ve been thinking of going along too.”

This had Veronica nearly out of her seat. “Why on earth would you do that? I’ll get you to that level in time – there’s no point in rushing ahead until we learn the basics. I’m not even sure I could manage them.”

Gerund let out a slow breath. It was always going to be her protecting him, teaching him, making sure he got where he needed to go in life. “I wasn’t going to try and learn stuff V, I’m just worried about Arwin and Bernard. Sheila said they were almost at blows before supper and I’m worried they might start up again tonight.”

A little dent had appeared in Veronica’s brow. “It isn’t our job to keep them from killing each other.”
